THE
IMPORTANCE OF
EXTRXCURRICULAR
ACTIVITIES
After-school
clubs, sports and activities outside the classroom have been proven to help a
student perform better academically and socially.

Private and international
schools make it a priority to offer a wide array of extracurricular activities
accessible to all students, regardless of inclination and performance. Although
there are parents who can be averse to their children spending too much time
engaging in sports, performing arts, community work and art, education experts
are stating that varying a learner's experience from a young age can improve
their academic, social and emotional mindsets.
Physical
and mental development
Sports help
refine a young person's motor skills and cognitive functions, ensuring that
these develop on track and maximally. Don't worry about bruises and bumps —
children are designed to recover quickly frominjuries. This also teaches them
resilience, to get up and try again, and the importance of teamwork in the case
of sports or projects.
Furthermore,
sports and out-of-classroom activities are powerful learning experiences where
students can develop their passions, motivation and time management. These are
perfect opportunities for young people to practice and hone a variety of skills
in a casual environment as they go through the different levels of education
and eventually the working world.
Emotional
intelligence and soft skills
Observe an
extracurricular club's meetings and activities and you'll notice the immense
amount of interpersonal communicationand leadership play that take place.
Modern-day educational research vouches for EQ and resilience in the face of
failure, over IQ, and extracurricular activities are an excellent catalyst for
improvements in these areas
As children
debate, speak publicly and work together as a team, they develop empathy, which
is the crux of succeeding in adult life. Besides broadening their perspectives,
experiential learning opportunities also boost self—esteem. These eye-opening
experiences endow young people with a sense of belonging, which is fortified by
a web of close friendships among schoolmates who are sharing the same
experiences
Self-discovery
We all excel
with different styles of learning. It's undeniable that differentpeople do
better in different academic subjects too, which is why students must be
exposed to a variety of fields. Introducing your student or child to a broad
spread of activities also enables them to discover where their interests and
strengths lie a student struggling with academic subjects may become the
world's next motor racing champion, or the maths whiz discovers a passion for
drama.
The
need for breaks
Exercise
re-energises the mind before indoor classes and studying resumes. Students who
exercise frequently have been found to enjoy good mental health, which wards
off common conditions like depression and anxiety.
Cut students a
break from mundanity and watch them uncover lessons that are not or cannot be
taught in the classroom. Extracurricular activities also help limit TV,
computer and smartphone screen time.
School
trips and excursions
Nowadays, many
schools organise trips locally, regionally andinternationally. These trips
offer many advantages including exposure to different cultures, becoming
independent, socialising with peers outside of school and learning new things,
especially in themed (language, business, geography) trips.
Besides trips,
outdoor activities and camping have been found to instil confidence and to
encourage children to try new experiences. Activities like hiking, swimming,
cycling, kayaking and just being close to nature is good for health, and allows
children to be free, learn life skills and bond with their friendsoutside the
confines of a classroom.
Well-rounded
learners
Don't hold your
children back from the multitude of soft skills that extracurricular activities
can help them harness. Research has proven that traits like problem-solving,
teamwork and public speaking are far more important in adult life than straight
As and book smarts. A varied spread of accomplishments and experiences makes
for an impressive university application and résumé, and eventually an accomplished
adult.
